CommentsThe Healthy Athletes program is an initiative designed to help Special Olympics athletes and people with intellectual disabilities improve their overall health and fitness, leading to an enhanced sports experience and improved well-being. A free lunch and volunteer shirt will be provided. There are a multitude of barriers limiting access to healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities including lack of awareness, socio-economic obstacles, limited self-advocacy, communication issues, and the comfort level and training of health providers. This lack of access has resulted in treatable diseases and ailments going undiagnosed and unaddressed. The Healthy Athletes program seeks to eliminate these barriers on behalf of athletes and clinicians alike.
We are currently recruiting volunteers to assist in administering these screening and education stations. I have included a poster with additional details regarding the event as well as summarized the screening details below. Please feel free to sign-up to volunteer through the provided link, and if you are able to distribute this material to students, professionals or general volunteers who might benefit from this experience or be interested in participating it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your consideration - have a great day!
Volunteers will receive training on the evening of the event on how to collect data and administer screenings. This screening is being delivered to High School Track and Field Athletes.
